I spent years asking what was wrong with me.
The day I changed the question, everything changed with it. Now I help children, adults and organisations ask a better one: what in this environment isn't working? I'm Kate La Trobe, Board Certified Behaviour Analyst, Certified ADHD Executive Functioning Coach, and a neurodivergent adult myself.
Over ten years, working across the UK and South Africa, I've supported children, families, adults and organisations to embed inclusion, bridging lived experience with evidence-based practice. I work with four kinds of people: adults making sense of their own brains, parents supporting a neurodivergent child, teenagers finding their feet, and organisations trying to get inclusion right. The thread through all of it is the same. Understand the brain first, then build the environment around it.
I was diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood. Before that diagnosis, I spent years feeling like I was working harder than everyone else just to keep up, and not understanding why.
That experience changed how I work. I understand what it is like to grow up feeling misunderstood, and I know that the question is rarely "what is wrong with me?" It is almost always "what in this environment is not working?"
It is why I will never hand a client a generic strategy and call it support.
My work is built on two frameworks. The first looks at executive functioning: how someone gets started, manages time, holds information in mind, plans and follows through, and regulates big emotions. The second looks at behaviour itself, understanding what it is communicating rather than trying to correct it.
Evidence-informed, in practice, means every strategy I suggest is tested against your actual week, not a textbook version of it. If it does not hold up in real life, we change it.
